Join us in celebrating the inclusion of a Seattle property, The Roost, in the latest volume of FIABCI’s The City We Need is Affordable. The Roost was selected from among dozens of entries from around the World, each showcasing a property that has implemented creative and, more importantly, replicable approaches to providing affordable housing options in their respective communities. This 4/23 event will include a networking reception, a presentation by David Neiman and David Taber of Neiman Taber Architects, the developers and owners of The Roost, and a tour of the property. FIABCI-Seattle was honored to sponsor The Roost in its submission to the editorial committee of The City We Need is Affordable.

The Roost is an innovative micro-housing community that was very much designed to support the arts and the artist community in Seattle. It combines small, private apartments, communal living areas, and street-level commercial space that’s reserved for arts-related organizations. All of the 33 apartment units are designed to function as live-work studios for artists, including private bathrooms, wardrobes, and kitchenettes. The units are double height, with the bedroom lifted up into a loft, freeing up space on the main level for a work area. This configuration provides the usability of a one-bedroom apartment in about 220 square feet of space. Just off the main building entry is a large common area that contains a kitchen, lounge, mail room, laundry room, and meeting space. The common area is designed as a public counterpoint to the smaller, private units. It mixes together a variety of uses, with the intention of facilitating chance interaction and building community among the residents. The street-level commercial space is currently the national headquarters of Amplifier, a media lab that connects artists with social change movements to design, produce, and distribute art that promotes their causes.

The City We Need Is Affordable

FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation, continues its The City We Need is Affordable series with the publication of Volume IV in February 2020, coinciding with the most recent World Urban Forum, which was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The book showcases large-scale, affordable housing developments, solutions for providing dignity and housing for the homeless, and innovative public-private partnerships from around the world. It's the latest result of FIABCI’s ongoing collaboration with the UN-Habitat World Urban Campaign.
